The Fortress of Girifalco in Cortona, Italy, with probable Etruscan origins, saw use by Goths and Lombards. Records date back to 1258, when Arezzo purchased it. The fortress underwent renovations by the Casali family and the Florentines in the 15th century. Transformed by the Medici, it featured large bastions and served defensive purposes. Gradually losing importance, it became a garrison and later a town police base. The shrine inside, dedicated to Santa Margherita, patron of Cortona, was built in 1304, embellished with notable frescoes in the 14th century. In 1385, Olivetani monks took over, later replaced by Minor monks. In August 1927, it attained the status of a minor basilica.
